Nelson

The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most treasured public art institutions, and GRE Services was privileged to be part of its landmark redevelopment. Situated beside Queens Gardens on the edge of central Nelson, The Suter is a cultural hub encompassing contemporary gallery spaces, a 150-seat theatre, dedicated education rooms, a popular café, and a vibrant gallery store.

The extensive renovation began in 2015 and was completed in 2016, preserving the original gallery and theatre buildings while integrating them into a striking new modern structure. The expansion provided additional exhibition spaces, improved education facilities, new offices, enhanced storage, and a spacious entrance atrium that ushers visitors into the heart of the gallery.

GRE Services delivered the complete electrical and lighting upgrade across the entire complex. This included new power distribution and switchboard systems, a comprehensive refresh of general and specialist lighting, and the integration of advanced gallery-grade lighting tailored specifically for exhibiting fine artworks. A KNX lighting control system was installed to allow staff to easily configure lighting scenes to suit each exhibition, ensuring artworks are always presented in the ideal environment.

This project represents a meticulous balance of heritage preservation, modern design, and technical precision. The upgraded electrical and lighting systems enhance the visitor experience while supporting the gallery’s operational efficiency and its mission to protect and showcase valuable artworks.

Heritage restoration, modern lighting technology, and cultural stewardship — powering one of Nelson’s most iconic arts destinations.
